Affiliate programs, also known as associate programs, are programs run by merchants that pay an affiliate a commission for generating sales. The term “affiliate” actually refers to any person who acts as an agent or counselor for another. In common usage, however, the word “affiliate” only refers to the sales person. This form of commission is a very effective way to earn money online, as it requires no upfront cost and little or no upkeep. As an affiliate, you earn a commission when a sale is closed, not when a visitor clicks on the affiliate link or makes a purchase.

While most affiliate programs have a disclaimer that states that all users and publishers of the programs shared responsibility for any content uploaded to their servers, some programs offer a way to circumvent this liability. This includes the use of software which allows affiliates to place their affiliate links onto their own websites. Some adware programs are developed specifically for this purpose. Other adware programs automatically place affiliate marketing links on websites without the users’ permission. These latter programs are often more harmful to publishers’ interests, since they may also affect the way advertisements are displayed on their pages.
Some affiliate programs reward publishers for referring customers to other merchants. When a publisher sends a referral, he is given a commission for his action. These commissions can be substantial, though the actual commission per referral may vary from one affiliate program to another. There are even some affiliate programs that will pay an affiliate only if a customer purchases a product or service provided by the affiliate. If you choose to use one of these affiliate programs, make sure you understand exactly what its commission structure and limitations are.
